Cell Phones and Naked People

11 Nov

Here in Mexico, they have these extremely obnoxious commercials for cell phone apps.

My favorite is the one that lets you scan people to see through their clothes.

There’s also the X-ray app…

Are these available in the States, too? Or just here?

More importantly, who pays for stuff like this?

Just Thursday

28 Oct

Outside my window.. lots of sunshine!!

The time is.. 9:24 am
Today I feel.. still sleepy, even though I slept for 10 hours last night.
I am thinking.. about how weird and vivid some of my dreams were last night. Scared to go back to sleep hahaha
At the moment, I am thankful.. for kind strangers. Thanks to the lady who offered to give me a ride to work yesterday 🙂 You made my week.
I am going.. to get lots of work done today (hopefully)
I am wearing.. my work uniform.
I wish.. we had Target in Cancun. Maybe someday!

I am reading.. They Came to Baghdad by Agatha Christie
I am working on.. losing some weight! Yesterday was a great day, and today will hopefully be even better. I have a tupperware full of fruit calling my name right now! Canteloupe and pitaya… mmm…

I am hoping.. to get Monday AND Tuesday off (for Day of the Dead), but I’m not going to get my hopes up, either.

I am hearing.. the clicking of keyboards.
I bet you didn’t know.. that Jorge almost lost his eyebrows this week. Time to get a new water heater.
One of my favorite.. fruits is canteloupe!! I’ve been buying it every week lately.
Weekend Plans.. I have no idea. It all depends on how everything plays out with days off and whatnot. Here are a few possibilities of what might happen:

Throwing a Halloween party with some friends

Going out to  a nightclub or bar for Halloween

Going to Yucatan for the whole weekend to visit Jorge’s family for Day of the Dead

MishMash

27 Oct

I don’t have anything specific to blog about today, but there are some random things going on, so let’s get you guys caught up 🙂

First of all, I always get asked how married life is going. It’s great! Jorge cleans, we’re both learning to cook a bit (even though he’s happy eating Nesquik cereal every night), we watch a lot of Law and Order because it’s one of the few shows we can agree on, we rarely argue, when we DO argue it never lasts more than 5 minutes (living with someone is a big motivation to apologize quickly haha)… life is good! My only complaint is that Jorge has now gotten hooked on a new video game called Plants vs. Zombies. Plays this thing for 3 – 5 hours a day. Seriously.

The crate training with Konan is going well. She’ll usually go outside on her own now. We can go out at night with friends and leave her outside the crate and she won’t go inside. Last week, we left her outside the crate all day when we weren’t home. The first day was perfect. The second day… not so much. So back into the crate she went the next day. Still… we’re progressing!!

Easy Off Bam! should be kept far, far away from all clothing items. I lost a shirt yesterday 😦

Calorie counting isn’t going as well this time as it did last time. I haven’t gone over my limit yet, which is good, but most days it’s not as low as it should be. I’m learning, though! Most important lesson: Don’t drink your calories! There are 250 calories in 500 ml of Coke… that’s the same as a light lunch!!

This is an exciting week in my favorite shows! Big Bang Theory is having a HILARIOUS 4th season, Glee did a Rocky Horror episode last night, New Zealand’s Next Top Model has its finale this week (go Danielle!), the Project Runway finale is tomorrow, and Survivor… well, Survivor is always interesting. Don’t tell me anything! I can’t watch any of it until this weekend!

20-Year-Old Student Becomes Police Chief

23 Oct

Most of you have probably heard about all the violence going down on the Mexico/US border, mostly related to drug wars. Luckily Cancun is far away from this area, but quite a few of my good friends live in border cities like Reynosa, Tijuana and Juarez.

I came across a very interesting piece of news this week. Here it is, copied from ThirdAge.com :

Marisol Valles Garcia is just a 20-year-old college student, but she is now the new police chief of Guadalupe, Mexico.

How did the criminology major get the job? Easy: no one else applied.

The once coveted position is now one of the most feared jobs to take on due to the drug cartels in Mexico. Public officials are increasingly becoming targets of the cartels, and many have fallen victim to assassination, including the former mayor of Guadalupe was slain in June.

“Before, it used to be an attractive job, living on the public payroll,” said Dante Haro of the University of Guadalajara. “Now being a town mayor is very difficult, not just because of the economic problems but also this issue of obedience to organized crime.”

The town has fallen victim to a brutal rivalry between notorious drug cartels. The gangs are fighting over the town’s one highway, a lucrative drug corridor that gives them access to Texas.

Garcia already has plans in store for the town: she wants to establish programs in the neighborhoods and schools in order to secure public spaces and to gain cooperation from the neighborhood.

So far, Garcia says, the people of Guadalupe have been very supportive.

Other plans are more controversial, however. She intends to use a largely female police force.

“We are simply going to talk with them, with the people, with the families, giving them confidence so they will quit being afraid, so they can leave their houses,” she told CNN en Español.

“We have hope that we are going to exchange fear for tranquility and security.”

Anyway, I think it’s sad that the situation is so bad, nobody else stepped up.  Still, she sounds like a very positive and brave person, and it will be interesting to see what she does.

What do you think about Marisol?

Too Young to Invest?

20 Oct

An acquaintance of mine is selling plots of land a few hours from Cancun, about 15 miles inland from the Mayan ruins of Tulum.

It’s cheap (about $12,000 USD total), the monthly payments are pretty easy, and the properties are big at 2.5 acres.

Negatives: It’s out in the middle of nowhere. I doubt there are any utilities out there at the moment, although who knows in a few years.

The city of Tulum is working on getting approval to build an international airport in the next few years, which could make this an amazing investment.

I dunno. This would be a much easier decision if we had more money.

What would we do with it? Hmmm, nothing right now. In a few years, either build on it or sell.

Anyway, just an idea to toy around with. It would be really cool, but is investing a priority at 24 years old?

Guess Where I’ll Be Tomorrow?

6 Oct

I’ll be abandoning you guys for a few days, and I don’t even feel sorry about it. Not one bit.

I’m going to Vegas!!!

Who gets that drunk before midnight? Seriously, people.

See you guys on Monday 🙂

Just Thursday

It’s Just Thursday with Murdock’s Mama! If you wanna be cool and join in, link up at her site:

Outside my window… we’re all soooo excited in Cancun! For the first time in a long time, we have minimal clouds 🙂 Welcome back, sunshine!

The time is… 9:53 am

Today I feel… a little overwhelmed with things to do at work, but there’s no rush, so I’m good!

I am thinking… that I wish I were either still in bed, or at the beach!!

At the moment, I am thankful… for a free trip to Las Vegas next week! My oldest sister is getting married 🙂 It’s going to be AWESOME.

I am going… to eat fish tacos today!! Wooo!

I am wearing… new earrings! Jorge is selling this really nice catalogue jewelry, and yesterday I got 2 new pairs 🙂 Look, they’re little rain clouds! How cute is that?

I wish… that the world would protect its natural resources more. Shame.

I am reading… Book of the Dead by Patricia Cornwell (months later… I know, I know)

I am working on… learning to cook! I’ve already perfected mushroom quesadillas, guacamole, zucchini with feta, caesar salad and grilled cheese with tomato. Nothin amazing, but dang, it all tastes good.

I am hoping… to buy a house in a year.

I am hearing… my boss talk about his trip to Cuba. I’m jealous!

I bet you didn’t know… that Barack Obama was five minutes from the house where I grew up yesterday, giving a conference 🙂 I still can’t get over that. I’m easily impressed.

One of my favorite… restaurants is PF Chang’s. I could really go for some lettuce wraps right now. Really wish they would open one in Cancun. *drool*

Weekend plans…

Thursday: get-together with some Cancun bloggers!! Yay! Followed by a going away party for a friend who’s going to study a month in Madrid 🙂

Friday: Jorge’s soccer match in the evening, followed by dinner somewhere with the team

Saturday: No idea

Sunday: Probably doing laundry and catching up on Season 2 of Glee (Don’t tell me anything! I haven’t seen anything yet!)
