Last Saturday, we went to a birthday party for my suegro.
Jorge’s grandmother had traveled from Yucatan to celebrate, and a visit from Abuela Elsy wouldn’t be complete without some fabulous Yucatan cuisine.
First we had San Simon. This dish is basically turkey with broth, covered in lots of toppings. The toppings can vary depending on the recipe, but our San Simon was covered in fried plantains, onion and homemade french fries.
It sounds like the most random combination of ingredients ever… but it was DELICIOUS.
For dessert, I got to try Caballero Pobre (“Poor Gentleman”) for the first time. I feel like this dish is basically the “french toast” of the Yucatan. It’s a baguette soaked in egg, fried in a bit of oil, then covered in a syrupy-cinnamony sauce.
Jorge’s been going over to his parent’s house every day this week to get some more of Abuela Elsy’s food.
What dishes are popular in your area?
Oh. My. Goodness. That looks amazing! How have you been losing weight with all that tasty fried food around?!
I didn’t! haha
The last 2 weeks I had been behaving very, very badly on weekends what with all the birthday parties I’ve been to, and lost very little weight. (Although the San Simon would be quite healthy without the homemade fries)
But now I’ve got my second wind and I’m right back in the saddle.
That food looks awesome- especially the san simon, yum! In el d.f. I eat a lot of tortas, tacos etc. In Puebla, I like cemitas. I want to travel to try out the food in more places- I hear Oaxaca is awesome.
Good job on getting back on the healthy train, not easy with delicious food around!
The “poor gentleman” sounds yummy to me!
Oh my gosh, both of those look “to die!” I really need to expand my culinary horizons by heading to Mexico!
Um…yum! Fast food is popular in our area… j/k We’re on a Vietnamese kick and and Indian kick lately. My sushi cravings will come back with warmer weather I bet.
A very well-known local favorite in St Paul-Minneapolis (Minnesota) is the Juicy Lucy. It is a hamburger stuffed with molten cheese so that when you bite into it, hot cheese comes oozing out
Yummy!! My stomach is grumbling! I love Yucatecan cuisine!
