Show Me Your … Parrot Eating a Tomato??

21 May

Today on Show Me Your… I’ll be killing two birds with one post 🙂

The Drama Mama asked to see my fave hangout in Cancun, and my bff from elementary school, Catie, asked to see my favorite food since moving to Cancun. So, today’s post will be about one of me & Jorge’s new fave restaurant in Cancun, “Va Que Va”.

Va Que Va  is a seafood restaurant located in downtown Cancun. Since it’s soooo far out of the way (on the opposite side of Cancun from the Hotel Zone) you’ll never see tourists here. It’s located in an average neighborhood, but you have to drive through quite a few sketchy neighborhoods to get there. It’s worth it though! Here’s why…

The entrance, hiding the restaurant from the street with foliage.

va que va!

4 out of 5 guys at my table drank micheladas

Jorge drank 2 of these! (gross?) Micheladas are basically beer mixed with Maggi steak sauce, worcestershire sauce, tabasco sauce, and lime juice, with salt and sometimes chili powder on the rim. Very popular in Mexico! Here at Va Que Va, they cost about $3 USD each for a liter. For $4 USD, you can get it with a skewer of shrimp in it.

I ordered a shrimp ceviche ($5 USD... that's the SMALL size!) and a frozen lime-ade.

4 of the guys split a platter for about $20 USD, which I believe included 4 kinds of shrimp and fried fish filet (you can pick and choose what you want the platter to include)

A parrot eating a tomato. Why not?

Why, hello there!

A mariachi band showed up...

...and spent the next half hour serenading the table next to ours.

We discovered this restaurant a few months ago and LOVE it. It’s always packed around lunchtime (1 – 3 pm here in Mexico). I think it’s impressive that I have seen no publicity whatsoever for this place, and yet it’s huge and fills up quickly. Just word-of-mouth, I guess.

I’m pretty sure I’ve expressed my love for ceviche multiple times on your blog. It was my only requirement for food at our wedding. My Husband’s was grouper. Now it is all I will think about all day!

That bird is too funny, and those micheladas sound good to me!

Awww how cute that parrot is!
All signs in the blogoverse are pointing to me having Mexican food for dinner. Is it weird that I really want to dry whatever that was that they were drinking? I can’t decide if I think it’s gross or not.

EWWW, the drink looks and sounds nasty…but the restaurant looks great! I LOVE wooden tables, I know I’m strange. But it seems really laid back, and that’s my kinda place 😉

I just finished lunch and trying to finish my diet coke as read your post. Half-way through, I no longer wanted my diet coke. I want a Michelada! Here in Jalisco, they also add Clamato! 🙂

And how cute is that parrot?! 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend.

Restaurants in Sicily are like that too: completely hidden from the street, not advertised at all, and yet always delicious and absolutely packed with people. I often wonder how tourists survive in Sicily because they must have so much trouble finding anything to eat! If I ever make it to Cancun though, I’m definitely writing to you for directions to that restaurant. It looks fantastic! (Although, I think I’ll pass on the steak-sauce-with-beer drink!)

Yum Yum YUM! That ceviche looks amazing! And for 5 bucks? That can’t be beat. I made a michelada for Cinco de Mayo, but it didn’t turn out very well…at all. And I love the parrot- who knew they ate tomatoes?

wow those micheladas do sound a bit gross. I get the tabasco sauce but steak & worcestershire sauce with the beer? Hmmm… But damn, that shrimp ceviche has me drooling bout now. We don’t have that kind of thing in Korea.
